The Medical Technology team at Canaccord Genuity plans to hire an equity research associate in the coming months. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated, intellectually curious, critical thinker that is detail oriented and enthusiastic about both MedTech and the markets. Do not send your resume unless you have a passion for the work we will be doing and can prove it.
You will be joining an equity research team tasked with tracking and anticipating investment and technology trends in medical technology. The desk operates out of the New York office. The primary responsibility of the associate will be to leverage the senior analyst so that she can spend more time on outward-facing research and client contact.
Your main responsibility will be primary research/due diligence, financial modeling and writing parts of equity research notes. Over time, the associate will become the Senior Analyst’s trusted partner, assisting in nearly all aspects of the franchise. He or she will think about the franchise holistically, looking forward to what value-added reports or events we should deliver. In effect, you will be a brand manager of our MedTech franchise.
Key Responsibilities:
- Fundamental research. You will be expected to track coverage of company products, strategies, catalysts, and competitors, as well as relevant medical industry events and trends. This is not a job you can learn through osmosis. Successful people in this business have an insatiable appetite for collecting and analyzing information. As such, candidates will have a thorough and rigorous analytical process and be comfortable with the distillation of large volumes of disparate financial and industry data points. You will conduct outbound surveys of physicians and corporate stakeholders from time to time. The associate will periodically travel to attend industry conferences.
- Modeling and writing. The associate is responsible for summarizing the key news items, fully and independently updating the earnings, cash flow and balance sheet models and then incorporating the conclusions/positioning commentary text provided by the senior analyst. Longer-term projects will include the preparation of 15+ page company initiation reports as well as industry whitepapers, thematic recaps from internal and external conferences, and quarterly previews/recaps.
- Communications. Once you have passed the regulatory tests (Series 7, 63, 86/87), you will be expected to be able to communicate the key aspects of our investment opinions on the companies we cover. Within a year, you should be able to answer 80% of the questions from inbound calls from institutional money managers.
- Keeping the franchise running. The associate should possess strong organization and time management skills and the ability to help prioritize key initiatives that create differentiation and long-term value for the franchise and firm overall. You will be expected to be self-motivated and self-driven.
The Equity Research Associate works in partnership with the Senior Research Analyst to develop deep expertise in the medical device industry coverage sector. As an Associate, you will conduct fundamental research and analysis of individual companies. You will be responsible for writing, investigating, and conducting channel checks which will support the research franchise. The ideal candidate will be able to thrive in a very fast-paced, demanding environment. You will be expected to work independently and be accountable for delivering 100% factually and logically accurate work under tight time constraints. Passion for medical devices, stocks/equity research, and integrity are a must.
Required Qualifications:
- Passionate about stocks and the financial markets. Strong personal interest in healthcare, particularly in the areas of medical device.
- Four-year bachelor's degree, preference for a major in Finance, Economics, Accounting or a healthcare-related focus.
- Proficiency in MS Office, particularly Word, Excel, and Power Point.
- Strong written and oral communication skills. This job requires strong grammar/writing skills and attention to detail, with no exceptions.
- Candidate must have an exceedingly strong work ethic, be highly self-motivated, highly organized, proactive, simultaneously manage multiple tasks, and have a strong attention to detail.
- Personality and fit are of utmost importance. While part of a much larger firm, +90% of your time will be spent working with the senior analyst. An enthusiastic, coachable, personality is a must.
Preferred Qualifications:
- One to three years' experience in equity research, investment banking, or finance. Strong preference to candidates with relevant internship experience in equity research (buyside or sellside) and/or the healthcare industry.
- Must have the ability to communicate clearly and concisely and must take pride in every aspect of the process.
- Superior quantitative, analytical and writing skills.
- Completion of or progress towards a CFA is a plus, but not required.
- Series 7, 63, 86, 87 will be required soon after starting the position, but are not prerequisites.
Compensation:
This role is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus and a generous benefits package in addition to the base salary. The success of the firm, your team, and your individual performance will determine the trajectory of your career and total compensation.
